I could not have said it any better. Like Jeanne, ours was always Carnation and it stayed that way for me once I started my own home and family until I couldnt get Carnation anymore quite some years ago now. I am never without one can on the shelf and one can permanently cold in the fridge....and I still have my little punch to punch holes into it too. It is ancient but a well used tool in my kitchen. My hubbies favourite little spur of the moment sweet treat - a bowl of bananas mashed with some sugar and ideal milk :o)browniegirlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09306353679605879682noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2652909958001968335.post-29647304868304110062009-12-23T02:46:24.417+02:002009-12-23T02:46:24.417+02:00Better a late comment than never ... a brilliant ...Better a late comment than never ... a brilliant blog on food sourcing v the realities of everyday life. Although we always had Carnation, as opposed to Ideal :) We also (at my dad's insistence) used to have the tinned fruit salad where everything was cut into little cubes and bore no resemblance ot the actual fruit. Truly Preserved and Proud.

Agree 100% that shunning preserved fruit is a luxury of the developed world's middle classes - for people in Africa preserved food is a godsend. And with frozen food, it's often nutritionally better to eat peas that have been picked and immediately frozen, than "fresh" peas peas that were picked and then trucked around the country to reach your grocery store!

That said, I refuse to eat anything that's been preserved with chemicals and contains more E-numbers than recognisable ingredients.
